Presenting the operation and the overall work of the National Competent Authority of Medically Assisted Reproduction up to now.

The National Competent Authority of Medically Assisted Reproduction aims at the safekeeping of the legal frame for the Assisted Reproduction in our country. Its goal is to protect both the assisted couple, or the woman and the children that are to be born via methods of Medically Assisted Reproduction (MAR). Its duty is the supervision of the appliance of laws 3089/2002 and 3305/2005.

As the president of the National Competent Authority of Medically Assisted Reproduction, Professor Aristides Antsaklis states the Authority’s main aim is the proper operation and the strengthening of the work of In Vitro Fertilization Units (IVFU) and the Cryopreservation Banks (CB).

  1. It suggested to the Minister of Health the issuing of Ministerial Decision 6901/2015 for the Conditions of Establishment and Operation of the Cryopreservation Banks.
  2. Issued the Expert Code of Conduct for the Medically Assisted Reproduction, that was published in GG 293/7/2/2017

According to all the above there have been sent on a specific date set by the Authority applications by 44 IVF Units and CBs .11 of those have already got a license whereas it is estimated that pretty soon every IVFU and CB will be licensed, as long as all requirements are met.

The Authority has published Regulatory Acts that have been published at the Government Gazette.

         National Authority of Medically Assisted Reproduction stands by citizens

Apart from its work as far as the compliance with the legal framework for the Medically Assisted Reproduction is concerned, the Authority offers its support to all those interested in MAR. It gives answers to all the questions of citizens via its site eaiya.gov.gr. Consequently it stands next to people wishing to get benefited by the Medically Assisted Reproduction. It answers peoples’ questions concerning the conditions for the implication of the Medically Assisted like a) the age limit of the medically assisted person, b) the appliance of the method Medically Assisted Reproduction to seropositive people, c) the transportation of genetic material in countries inside and outside the European Union. d) surrogate mothership e) the implementation of the procedure as far as  people outside marriage are concerned.

Electronic Interconnection of IVF Units

A highly important goal of the Authority consists the Electronic Interconnection of the IVF Units according to the National and European Legislation.

The National Authority monitors the preserving of all the legal requirements and then it establishes the license of IVF Units and CBs.  It carries unexpected monitoring or after complaints. It imposes the foreseen administrative sanctions following specific administrative inquiry.

It cooperates with the respective Authorities of other countries as well as with European and International Organisations and Agents concerning the exercising of its duties and generally supports all those interested in getting benefited by the Medically Assisted Reproduction.
